Spreadsheets are where most businesses start, and for good reason. But there's a point where they start working against you.
1. Only one person understands the file
If "Sunita's sheet" is the business and Sunita is on leave, you have a risk, not a system.
2. You have several versions
final_v2_new.xlsx is a warning sign. When two people edit different copies, numbers stop agreeing.
3. You find mistakes at month-end
A wrongly typed rate or a deleted row can go unnoticed for weeks.
4. Staff can see everything, or nothing
Spreadsheets can't easily show a salesman only his customers or hide purchase rates from the counter.
5. You can't answer simple questions fast
"Who owes me money for more than 45 days?" should take five seconds, not an afternoon.
What to do
You don't need a huge ERP. Start with the one process that hurts most, usually billing and stock, and move only that. Keep exporting to Excel for the rest. A good system will import your existing sheets on day one.
